| ℹ️ The dye system was overhauled in version 15.0 and rebalanced in version 15.1. Dye Consumable items were removed in 15.1 — the system now uses Dye Unlocks instead. |
Dyeing lets you change the colour of clothing, walls, floors, and décor. You need two things to dye an item: a Dye Unlock for that color, and the materials to apply it — Pigment Color and Mordant Base.
The two dye materials
| Material | What it does | How to get it |
| Pigment Color | Provides the actual color. Different Pigment Colors produce different dye results. | Harvested from flowers and potted plants. Specific plants produce specific colors. |
| Mordant Base | Acts as a fixative — required alongside Pigment Color to apply most dyes. | Purify Mushrooms (as of v15.1 — previously from Flowers). Also available from some shops. |
| ⚠️ In version 15.1, the source of Mordant Base changed from Flowers to Mushrooms. Any Purified Mushroom items already in your inventory were removed and compensated with coins via mail. |
Dye Unlocks
Before you can apply a color, you need to unlock it. A Dye Unlock registers that color as permanently available to you — once unlocked, you can use it as many times as you like (as long as you have the materials).
You can get Dye Unlocks from three sources:
- The Chromatist in the Village Center — buy Dye Unlocks using Beacon Sparks (cost reduced in 15.1).
- Levelling up your Friendship with Villagers — new Dye Unlocks are added to Friendship track rewards.
- Wallpaper and Flooring Unlocks — obtained by levelling up Home Prestige.
| ⚠️ Décor and Clothing Dye Consumable items were removed in version 15.1. If you had any, you can still use them or purify them into Mordant Base. |
What can be dyed?
| Item type | Notes |
| Clothing | Dye at the Clothing Dye Station. Most wearable items can be dyed. |
| Walls | Dye in Build Mode or from home settings. |
| Floors | Dye in Build Mode or from home settings. |
| Décor | Dye from item options while in your home. Not all décor is dyeable. |
| Gliders | Glider dyeing has been removed from the Clothing Dye Station for the time being. Joule now sells gliders in a variety of dye colors directly. |
Cost of dyeing
The amount of Pigment Color and Mordant Base required to dye items was decreased in version 15.1 for most items — especially for more expensive dyes. Some cheaper dyes may cost slightly more than before. Check the dye station or item options to see the current cost before applying.
