What is it?
The Progress Debug Screen lets you see how far you’ve progressed in each bear’s storyline. It’s basically an internal Customer Support tool that we’re exposing so players can easily get and share information that will let others help them. As a result, it won't be pretty or translated, but it should be functional.
Why does it exist?
We field a lot of questions to the effect of, "I've been waiting for a particular bear to do something and it hasn't happened yet—did I encounter a bug?". That's not an easy question to answer unless we know the last thing that happened in each bear's storyline and when it happened, which varies from player to player (while each bear's story milestones come in the same order, not all players complete each milestone at the same speed). Unfortunately most players don't remember all of the details we need. But the game tracks these things internally. The Progress Debug Screen exposes what the game knows about these details so that players can easily share this information with the people helping them (either our support staff, or other players on Discord/Reddit, or even the player themself).
How do I access it?
Note that you must have app version 2.1.0 or higher, which is available for all platforms.
Note 2: If you have a choice between using a controller or mouse/touchscreen (e.g., the Nintendo Switch has both), use the controller when doing this.
If using a mouse or touchscreen
- Open the backpack. (Do this even if you can already see the inventory slots described in future steps—it just seems to work more consistently.)
- Identify the first, second, and third inventory slots in the following manner:
- The square that contains (or would contain) the "equipped item" is the "first" slot. On all screen layouts this square is visible on the left bar.
- If your screen layout has multiple inventory slots on the left bar, the "second" slot is the square below the first slot, and the "third" slot is the one below that.
- If you screen layout has only one inventory slot on the left bar, the "second" slot is the upper-left square of the backpack grid, and the "third" slot is the square next to it on the top row.
- Reorganize your backpack so those slots are empty, just to be sure they won't have any contents that might interfere with inputting the code described in the next item.
- Within 6 seconds (10 seconds in versions 3.2.0 and higher), tap/click those slots in the sequence described below. (Sorry; I know, this is a very short amount of time in which to do 11 taps/clicks.) The line breaks are just for grouping the taps/clicks mentally—you don't have to pause between each group.
- First First First
- Second Second Second
- First Second
- First Second
- Third
- A screen should come up that says "Debugging" at the top. If not, please wait about 10 seconds then try entering the code again. You don't have to close the backpack between tries.
If using a controller
Note: There's a bug preventing this from working with controllers in versions prior to version 2.3.0. If you have a touchscreen, please try with that instead.
- Open the backpack.
- Position your cursor on an empty square of the backpack grid.
- Within 6 seconds (10 seconds in versions 3.2.0 and higher), press the buttons in the sequence described below. (Sorry; I know, this is a very short amount of time in which to do 11 button presses.) The breaks are just for grouping the presses mentally—you don't have to pause between each group. Also, these are distinct button presses that should be done one after the other—you never have to press multiple buttons at the same time.
- Nintendo Switch: AAA YYY AY AY X
- Xbox controller: AAA XXX AX AX Y
- PlayStation controller: XXX SquareSquareSquare XSquare XSquare Triangle
- A screen should come up that says "Debugging" at the top. If not, please wait about 15 seconds then try entering the code again. You don't have to close the backpack between tries.
How do I read it?
- There should be one line on the Progress Debug Screen for each of the bears with a storyline that already exists on the island. If the bear hasn't yet come to the island, there won't yet be a line for it.
- Each line on the Progress Debug Screen has three fields:
- Internal name of a bear (e.g., "ranger" is Ranger Bear, a.k.a. Charlotte Pine)
- The numeric ID of the last milestone completed in that bear's storyline, or "N/A" if you've not yet completed any milestones related to that bear's storyline
- Some milestones are completed by completing a particular Story Quest
- Other milestones are completed by simply having a particular conversation with that bear
- The game date at the time the last milestone completion took place, or "N/A" if the milestone ID was "N/A". The date format is yyyy-mm-dd (year-month-day).
- For most players this would be synonymous with the real date, but for folks messing with their devices' calendars it would be the adjusted date
- If you completed the milestone between midnight and 5am, it will be the previous day's date because the game considers 5am to be the start of a new day. (This is new to version 2.3.0. In prior versions, we didn't shift the date for completions between midnight and 5am.)
How is this useful?
Here are a few applications:
- If you know, for example, that you're supposed to get such-and-such item after completing Veggie Bear's Milestone 14, you can look at this screen to see if you've already completed Veggie Bear's Milestone 14. If so (as in the screenshot above—this player has completed not only Milestone 14 but also Milestone 15), either you have the item, used the item, misplaced the item, or something went wrong.
- Note that the milestone count includes both Story Quests and Story Chats. Some websites count only quests, which can give an incorrect basis for comparison to the numbers on the Progress Debug Screen.
- Related to the above, if you know that such-and-such happens when a certain milestone is completed, you can see what milestone you've most recently completed for that bear and get an idea of how far away that thing is from happening.
- This page describes how the game issues new milestones. Someone who knows the number of calendar days you need to wait for each milestone can tell you if you've been waiting too long by counting the days between the last milestone's completion date and today's date.
- The problem usually isn't that the game forgot to give a player the next milestone. It's usually one of the following:
- The player hasn't yet completed the bear's current milestone
- The player hasn't yet waited enough calendar days for the next milestone
- The bear is ready for the next milestone quest/conversation but the player hasn't talked to the bear
- Occasionally the player hasn't received the next milestone because the game is waiting for some additional condition to be met, as described on the page I linked to. However, since there are so few milestones with additional conditions, usually that's not the issue.
- The problem usually isn't that the game forgot to give a player the next milestone. It's usually one of the following:
Some milestones we get asked about a lot
- There are seven Scout Book Pages in the game, and two quests that require them. You can turn in any Scout Book Pages you want for either quest, but:
- The first time Ranger Bear asks for Scout Book Pages (Ranger Bear's 7th milestone), the three she expects are from:
- Seagull Bear's 4th milestone
- Postal Bear's 2nd milestone
- Wooden Bear's 4th milestone
- The second time Ranger Bear asks for Scout Book Pages (Ranger Bear's 11th milestone), the four she expects are from:
- Maker Bear's 10th milestone
- Baker Bear's 5th milestone
- Mayor Bear's 2nd milestone
- Veggie Bear's 2nd milestone
- The first time Ranger Bear asks for Scout Book Pages (Ranger Bear's 7th milestone), the three she expects are from:
- The Master Machete and Snorkel Mask are received after completing Veggie Bear's 6th milestone.
- Spirit Evidence
- Scaredy Bear's 9th milestone is when you receive the Spirit Evidence. It's a conversation with Bruin Tram—no questing involved.
- Retiree Bear's 14th milestone is the quest in which Retiree Bear asks for the Spirit Evidence. You'll get the "photo of Bruin" as a reward for completing this milestone.
- Scaredy Bear's 10th milestone is the quest in which you should turn in the "photo of Bruin" to Scaredy Bear.
- The Motorcycle Key is received after completing Veggie Bear's 14th milestone
- The quest with the Seditious Flyers and the Rebellious Spirits is Revolutionary Bear's 3rd milestone.
- In versions 2.2.0 and earlier, the Compass is received after completing Ranger Bear's 26th milestone.
- In version 2.3.0 and onward, the Compass is a hidden object and thus is no longer given by a Ranger Bear milestone.
- Ranger Bear has some very lengthy "wait a certain number of days" gaps between milestones. The biggest is a 12-day gap between the 21st and 22nd milestones, but there are some others of comparable length.
- Ranger Bear's Milestone 18 quest won't be presented to you until you meet two requirements:
- 6 days pass after completing her 17th milestone
- Complete Rock Bear's 4th milestone
- Scaredy Bear's Milestone 18 quest won't be presented to you until you meet two requirements:
- 2 days pass after completing his 17th milestone
- Complete Emperor Bear's 4th milestone
- Seagull Bear's final milestone is 23. This is when he ascends and when you get his final memory. You can get it immediately after completing his 22nd milestone if you take the boat in between.
- Note: If you're putting off taking the boat because you don't want your time on Cozy Grove to end or think you won't be able to finish other bears' storylines, just take the boat—your time on Cozy Grove won't come to an end and you'll still be able to complete the other bears' storylines.
- Party Bear's 32nd milestone asks for an Origami Sculpture. We've written another article specifically about this milestone.

But you must have played enough campaign days that Ms. Carouse is unlocked, and the Spring Festival must currently be running. The crystal dowsing rod breaks after a single use and is unrepairable, the intent being that players interested in its effect will buy it multiple times during the Spring Festival.
