We have a standing, strict policy against using AI in any way to generate art, text, sound, music, writing, game designs, and other creative assets and game content. We are committed to making sure that 100% of our creative work and game content remains human-created, in Spirit Crossing and our other games.
So, where do we use AI? Some of our engineers and designers use AI in limited ways, on an opt-in basis only, to edit code and configuration files. This has been a critical process improvement for us, since we are trying to make things work as a small independent studio with very limited resources. We have a strict policy that no code or configuration files may enter the game without being thoroughly reviewed, edited, and 100% owned by a skilled senior human developer.
This limited usage of AI as a coding assistant has been the difference between our team being able to successfully ship Spirit Crossing and being unable to do so before we run out of funding. To put it another way: in some companies, AI is being used as an excuse to justify layoffs, but in this studio, we have been hoping that AI might help us avoid layoffs. Spry Fox is an employee-owned company, and the employees as a whole control more equity than the studio’s managers. We made this decision by consensus, as we make all major decisions, because we care about each other and want to keep making games together.
