Notes:
- This article only applies to computers; we don't auto-generate backup save files on other platforms.
- If you're on version 1.8.0 or earlier, this probably won't help you if your save got goofed up because of a crash or loss of power. In these versions + situations, the backup often gets overwritten by nonsense. Hopefully in future versions the backup won't get overwritten by nonsense when these situations occur.
Steps
- If the game is currently running, completely exit the game.
- Go to the folder where your save and auto-generated backup saves are stored.
- Identify all of the backups for the save file of interest.
- Save Slot 1's save file is named cg_save.sf . Note that there is no "_1" in this file name!
- Save Slot 2's save file is named cg_save_2.sf
- Save Slot 3's save file is named cg_save_3.sf
- Backups: The names begin the same as the slots they are backing up, but have _bak, _bak1, _bak2, _bak3, _bak4, and _bak5 just before the ".sf" extension.
- E.g., cg_save_bak2.sf is one of the backups for Save Slot 1.
- E.g., cg_save_2_bak.sf is one of the backups for Save Slot 2.
- _bak is the newest backup for that save slot, _bak1 is the next most recent, then _bak2, . . . , and _bak5 is the oldest.
- Rename all of the backups for the save file of interest to something else so they won't get overwritten the next time you run the game. An easy way to do this is to prepend the word "my" in front of them. E.g., mycg_save_bak.sf
- Launch the Cozy Grove game, go to the Save Slots menu, and click the appropriate red X to delete the (goofed-up) save slot. If it's already empty, that's fine. Then completely exit the game.
- I've assumed that the save slot is goofed up or you wouldn't be trying to fix it.
- One at a time with the renamed backups from Step 4 (start with the newest and proceed in order to the oldest):
- Make a copy of a backup file from Step 4 (DO NOT DIRECTLY USE THE FILE FROM STEP 4!)
- Name the copy what the real save file should be named. (This is either cg_save.sf , cg_save_2.sf , or cg_save_3.sf . Note that the filename for Save Slot 1 shouldn't have an "_1" in it.)
- Run the game and try to load into the game with the relevant save slot.
- If it works and has the state you want, great—you can delete all of the renamed backups from Step 4.
- If it doesn't work or doesn't have the state you want, exit the game. Repeat Step 5 and then try Step 6 again with the next backup. Don't delete any backups so that you can try again or email them to Support if needs be.
