Please see the section for the version you're playing and whether you're playing normal or hard mode.
iOS/tvOS Normal Mode (as opposed to Hard Mode)
If you complete the 15-year career and die of natural causes
- Children are still getting lost in the forest.
- A new Ranger (the previous Ranger is now dead) arrives in town, starting out in Year 1.
- The new Ranger will have to get the mayor to unlock the house for him/her. This is done by completing Year 1.
- The bannable items stored in the basement of the house will still be there.
- The new Ranger will probably find some (but probably not all) of the previous Ranger's charms on the first floor of the house.
- NPC relationships start over from being strangers. (It's a new Ranger, so they really are strangers!)
- Secrets that were recorded in the Book of Secrets remain recorded there—progress in the Book is not lost.
If you die through failure or loss of energy
- The Ranger is resurrected and re-starts from whatever year he/she died in. (I.e., you aren't sent all the way back to Year 1.)
- The bannable items stored in the basement of the house will still be there.
- You get to keep all of the charms you've collected up until this point.
- NPC relationships persist.
iOS/tvOS Hard Mode, Steam version, and PlayStation 4 version
What happens depends on how you die and whether you have an active Shrine checkpoint.

If you don't have an active Shrine checkpoint and die through failure or loss of energy
- Same as above, except that the new Ranger will find none or very few of the previous Ranger's charms on the first floor of the house.

- The Ranger is resurrected and re-starts from whatever year you activated the Shrine in. (I.e., you aren't sent all the way back to Year 1.)

- With the exceptions of the House Key, Silver Watch, and Gold Watch, all charms are lost, having been sacrificed to the gods in exchange for being resurrected.
- NPC relationships persist.
