(Note: details on this page subject to change as we continue to balance the game. The article currently reflects how version 2.1.0 works. Please update the app if you still running something lower than 2.1.0; we're up to version 3.1.1 on all platforms at the time I modify this sentence.)
On each new campaign day, up to 5 pets of each species can become hungry. There is no explicit cap on how many can be hungry if you left some hungry pets unfed on previous days; however, hunger expires after a few days so there is an implicit limit. I.e., if you have many, many pets, it will definitely be the case that on any given day some of them won't want to eat.
- A pet can't be chosen as hungry if it's in your backpack or your Storage. This is a change from previous versions of the game.
- An individual pet can't become hungry again if fed within the last 12 hours, even if a new campaign day has started during that time.
- You need to have 10 pets of a species that can become hungry in order to hit the max value of 5 becoming hungry. If you have less than 10 that can become hungry, fewer than 5 will become hungry.
- Feeding non-hungry pets isn't beneficial, and probably isn't possible unless you're playing a very old version of the game.
- The algorithm that picks which pets will become hungry tries to pick at least one pet from each species/rarity combination and prioritizes the pet within that combination that has been fed the most often. (This is assuming that none of the other rules prevent such pets from being hungry.)
- The point of this is to ensure that players with lots of pets are still able to level up pets (since an individual pet levels up after being fed a certain number of times) and get a variety of feeding rewards (since rewards vary by species and maturity). Previously players had to limit their pet populations if they wanted these things to happen reliably.
When a pet is hungry, a bubble over its head displays what it wants to eat. Throw this item to the pet and the pet should eat it. (Alternatively, you can talk to the pet and choose to feed it the item if you have the item in your backpack/Storage.) After eating, the pet should give you the option to Harvest it for a reward.
- Throw the item the same way you throw your bobber when fishing. Note that the item you'll try to throw is the one in your active item slot, so move the food there first before trying to throw it.
- Watch out for imps who might try to eat the food before the pet does. If you walk close enough to the imps, the imps should go away and allow you to throw without worries.
- If you throw the wrong item to the pet, the pet won't eat it. Note that some foods look very similar, so look carefully at the graphic if your hungry pet doesn't seem to want what you threw.
- Pets of different type and maturity produce different resources, so it is to your advantage to have as many type/maturity combinations as possible.
If you're not able to feed the pet the requested item right now, don't worry about it. The pet will continue to be hungry for this particular food for about 2 days before losing its appetite, so you have some time to work toward getting the food.
- Pets don't give any permanently missable rewards, so it isn't that big a deal if you miss a feeding opportunity. You can try again whenever this pet becomes hungry again.
- When it becomes hungry again the pet may ask for the same food or a different food than it did previously.
- Each species/maturity combination of pet has a different set of foods it can ask for. However, with one explicit exception, pets won't ask for items that you don't know how to craft. So if you haven't learned many crafting recipes yet then your pets of a specific species/maturity combination won't have much variety in what they ask for—you'll see more variety among their requests as you learn more of the relevant recipes.
- The exception is the Young Placid Bird that Ranger Bear asks you to purchase very early in the game. The first item this bird will be hungry for is a Bagel, which you probably won't yet know how to craft. The point of this request for a Bagel to teach you about the Mail system. The day after you show the Young Placid Bird to Ranger Bear, you'll receive some Bagels in the mail that you can feed to this bird.
There are three levels of pet maturity: Young, Adult, and Mature. Currently an individual Young pet will become an Adult after you feed it 5 times, and an individual Adult will become a Mature animal after you feed it 10 times. (I.e., it takes 15 feedings to turn a brand new Young animal into a Mature animal.)
