The lantern that the scout may sometimes carry is a non-essential visual feature that exists on some platforms. It isn't meant to substantially affect the game, so don't worry if your platform doesn't have it.
- Whether your platform has the lantern feature enabled is based on how much the lantern will negatively impact the game's performance (lagging, reduced frame rate, etc.).
- If your platform doesn't have a Quality setting in the game's Options Menu, then the programmers have already determined whether the lantern and certain other non-essential visual features will adversely affect performance and enabled/disabled them accordingly.
- If your platform has a Quality setting in the game's Options Menu, then setting it higher may enable the lantern feature, and setting it lower may remove the lantern feature. (The assumption is that players reduce the Quality setting in order to improve performance.) But if the game would definitely perform poorly with the lantern then adjusting the Quality setting may change other things but won't enable the lantern.
- If the lantern is enabled, the scout will carry its lantern when it's dark out in the game--between roughly 7:30pm and 6am.
- While the scout is carrying its lantern, the lantern shines light (not color) in a small circle near the scout. Many players find that the extra light helps them to see items on the ground.
- If your platform doesn't have the lantern feature but you'd like additional light to help you see hidden items, consider enabling the Perpetual Daylight option in the game's Options Menu.
- The scout won't carry its lantern if the Perpetual Daylight option is enabled, regardless of what time it is. It's daylight out, so why would the scout need a lantern?
